Book Review for The Inmate by Freida Mc Fadden

The Inmate: A gripping psychological thriller. Brooke moves back to her hometown that she hasn’t been to since she left at 17, pregnant after a physical attack. She got a job working as a Nurse Practitioner at a state penitentiary, the same prison where her attacker is incarcerated.

The Inmate by Freida McFadden

Book Club Books Recommendation: For those who love thriller mysteries

Read It! 5/5 Books 📚📚📚📚📚

Brooke is a single mom and nurse practitioner making ends meet without any family support. When her parents die in a car crash and she moves back home to the house where she grew up. Brooke hasn’t been back to her hometown since she left at the age of 17, pregnant following a physical attack. The only job she can find is at the state prison about an hour from home. Working in the prison means she is working where her attacker is incarcerated.

As the story progresses, the reader will surely change their mind repeatedly about who Brooke should trust and who is lying to her. I love when novels convince you that you have it all figured out, only to have the rug of the plot pulled out from under your feet! Author Freida McFadden is able to do that many times in this novel. At times you will find yourself yelling at Brooke and her decisions and at other times excited that she is so resourceful.

The resolution, the epilogue, was perhaps the best part of the novel, be sure you don’t skip it!

The author:

Freida Mc Fadden is a bestselling author according to several outlets, Amazon #1, New York Times, and USA Today just to name a few. Her website, https://www.freidamcfadden.com/ makes it clear that all of her books are available in paperback, audiobook, and Kindle Unlimited. While she is an independently published author, my library also has copies of her books so you can check with your local library and even request that they get copies if they don’t have them. Her website also has a merchandise store. Get your Freida won’t let me sleep shirt, sticker, coffee mug and more. She really has some clever items. Ms. McFadden has an active Facebook page, Twitter (X), and Instagram. Perhaps the best thing on her website are Discussion Questions for many of her books that you can use with your book club, or just to make you think.

What is not to like?:

The protagonist Brooke seems a bit too naïve sometimes. Perhaps I’ve read too many thrillers and have become skeptical of every action, but several times I thought she was too trusting.

The verdict:

This is an excellent read. The novel takes you and your thinking skills on a great ride.
