These cookies have been a treasured family recipe for decades. My great grandma was from Nebraska and made these as treats during the holidays. The cookies are sweet and satisfying with oatmeal in the dough. Every year these are the cookies I look forward to enjoying.

Assemble the Ingredients

The first thing to do is prepare the dates. Don’t buy the prechopped dates; buy the whole dates and then put them in a food processor with a little bit of flour. Pulse the date until they are roughly chopped.
Pour one cup of water and one cup of sugar into a saucepan on high heat. Add the date and cook, stirring often until they turn into a paste. Once mix begins to boil, reduce the heat to low. Remove from heat.
Combine sugar, margarine, egg, milk and vanilla

Then add all the dry ingredients alternating flour and oatmeal with the salt and baking soda added to the middle of the mix.
The dough will be sticky and so you may have to add a little more flour so that it does not stick to the counter.

If your dough is too sticky, knead in more flour. Then roll out the dough. Thickness of the dough is your preference – remember – the thicker it is the thicker the cookie will be.

- 1 pound whole dates
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar for date mixture
- 1 cup Crisco
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp soda
- 1 cup sugar for cookie dough
- 1 egg
- ½ cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 cups oatmeal, quick or old fashioned
- 2½ cups flour
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Put cut up dates, water and sugar in a sauce pan and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally until dates cook into a paste.
- Take off heat and put aside until needed.
- Combine sugar, margarine, egg, milk and vanilla in a stand mixer.
- Then add all the dry ingredients alternating oatmeal and flour.
- The dough will be sticky and so you may have to add a little more flour so that it does not stick to the counter.
- Flour the counter or pastry mat and roll out a portion of the dough.
- Knead in more flour if dough is too sticky to roll out.
- Thickness of the dough is your preference - remember - the thicker it is the thicker the cookie will be.
- Cut the dough with a glass or biscuit cutter that has been dipped in flour so that the cutter does not stick to the dough.

What would I do differently next time?
I might use 3 cups of flour. My dough was very sticky and I did need to add more flour once on the counter.
