You still have time to read this novel before the movie rendition is released May 2, 2024. If you liked The Fault in Our Stars, you must read Turtles All the Way Down. The story follows a teen dealing with OCD and the need to balance her family and her friends.

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green Book to Movie Review

If you have or you have known someone with anxiety or OCD, this book is a must read. Aza deals with her intrusive thoughts and fear of death. Her best friend, Daisy, has troubles of her own, but Aza is too wrapped in herself to notice.

Book Review Outline and Tone

The ending! Read this book for the ending! John Green is a great author.

No one would ever accuse me of being Type A, let alone accuse me of having OCD tendencies. I’m a roll with the punches kind of person. However, I do know and love people who deal with anxiety, OCD, and other mental health issues. If you don’t have these issues, it may be hard to initially relate to Aza, the main character. But even if you cannot personally relate to Aza, keep reading. In the end, the reader sees Aza simply as a person and not a person with mental illness.

As an English teacher, one of the habits I teach students is to make predictions as they read. Making predictions helps to make a connection with the story. This habit of making predictions should really start at the title. What does the title mean? Why did the author write the title? I could have made a thousand predictions and I would not have come up with the right reason. It is when the title is revealed that the book seems to have a turn. Instead of seeing the main character as annoying or someone I just couldn’t relate to, she becomes someone new. Someone who is not just the result of her compulsions. And this change, this turn in the story is what makes John Green such a remarkable author.

Back to the ending. Once you have read the book, visit John Green’s TikTok. He explains why, just maybe, why this novel will be his last YA novel. And when you learn his thoughts about this book, it will make the ending even more poignant.

Best Quotes:

“Wow,” I said. “So, you’re looking at the past.”

“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” Robert Frost

“I, a singular proper noun, would go on, if always in a conditional tense.”

Point of View:

First person told by the main character, Aza.

The author: John Green

John Green is the best selling author of Looking for Alaska, The Fault in Our Stars, and many more wonderful books. If I started listing all his accolades, this blog post would be way too long. He has not just had a successful writing career, but he is also well known for his YouTube videos. His channel, Crash Course, claims he covers topics such as chemistry, literature, world history, biology, philosophy, theater, ecology, and more. His videos are short enough to keep your attention and detailed enough to help you learn something new.

He has an active social media presence. You can follow him on Twitter @johngreen and Instagram @johngreenwritesbooks or visit him online at johngreenbooks.com.

What is not to like?:

Since I don’t have the same type of mental illness as the lead character, it took me a bit to connect with her.

The verdict

To say that I highly recommend this book is to sell it short. I found it fantastic!
