Escape rooms are popular, but what if what you thought was a game, was really a matter of life or death? Would it still be fun? The competitive people in the world of high finance face this dilemma.

Book review of psychological thriller The Escape Room by Megan Goldin

This is a stand alone book that keeps you guessing right up to the big reveal. If you love suspense or thriller books, this is a must read. If you are intrigued by the competitive dog-eat-dog world of finance, this is a must for you.

Book Review

Book Outline and Tone:

When I did an escape room, I used all of my extra clues and was even granted a bit of extra time for us to solve all of the puzzles. I found the escape room concept fun and difficult at the same time. Let me assure you that this is no ordinary escape room. What is on the line for these characters is life and death.

Of course the stakes have to be raised in this book to build the suspense. Author Megan Goldin does a fantastic job of intertwining stories and making the reader guess and second guess before the big reveal. The characters all step into a typical New York elevator only to realize this is the room they must escape.

People in high finance have a reputation for being cut-throat level competitive. This makes for great characters that you may admire or love to hate, depending on your views. Each character has a strong personality and each character seems to be a plausible puppet master. While I would never give away any of the juicy details, the novel did make me think twice when I stepped into an elevator.

The author: Megan Goldin

Megan Golden lives in Australia after working as a Reuters correspondent. She has written 5 books and replied to a comment on Goodreads that she is open to writing a sequel to The Escape Room (that would be fabulous). She posts some updates on Facebook. She posts on X. She seems to be most active on Goodreads and even answers fans questions there.

What is not to like?:

So much happens in the small space. Sometimes it is difficult to visualize how the characters managed it all.

The verdict:

Great suspenseful thriller. I highly recommend it.
