Book Review

Outline and Tone

There is something so satisfying as to watch karma unfold.  Robbie Jordan grew up with just a mom in her life and she had a great childhood. Shortly after her mom died unexpectedly, Robbie moved back to her mom’s hometown of Salt Lick, Indiana. In this small town, she starts a country restaurant and store, Pans and Pancakes. As a new business owner and new resident to the small town, the last thing Robbie needs is to discover someone has been murdered and had one of her signature cheese biscuits shoved into the victims mouth. While she would rather spend her days growing her business, cycling, and getting to know her new boyfriend, she has to instead discover who committed this murder and why did they involve her with the biscuit.

The author

Maddie Day is one of my favorite authors to follow on social media. She posts regularly on Twitter @edithmaxwell. She also has a large following on Instagram and Facebook. Like so many authors, Maddie Day is a pseudonym for Edith Maxwell. She has at least six book series that can all be found on her website which is elaborate and has inside information and reviews for all of her books.

What is not to like?

The protagonist, Robbie Jordan is an admirable character that is easy to root for. I chose to listen to the audio version of the book on my commute and the only thing not to love was the apparent age of the narrator. Robbie is 27 years old and as this series begins, but the narrator on the audio book sounds much older. I had to suspend my disbelief of the age of the narrator and focus on the story.

The verdict

Highly enjoyable! Robbie Jordan (the protagonist) is a diverse character whose shop caters to the needs of her community and is highly believable. I am excited to have found this series, and look forward to reading the next book.

Make a well in the middle and add the eggs and milk, mixing with a fork in the well. Add the cheese and stir all with a fork, until liquid and cheese are just blended with the flour. Do not overmix.

Lightly knead the dough until it comes together. I always use a nonstick silicone pastry mat like this to measure the dough while rolling it out and for easy clean up.

This silicone pastry mat is dishwasher safe!

Flour a rolling pin. Roll the dough to a half-inch thickness. Fold in thirds. Roll, fold, and repeat several times.

Cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter or drinking glass and position on a baking sheet. You don’t need more than half an inch in between.

Bake for about ten minutes or until risen and golden brown on top.

Serve warm with miso or meat gravy, apple butter, or honey.

What would I do differently next time?

These biscuits were delicious with cheddar cheese. Next time I will try them with pepper jack cheese. The folding of the dough made for great flaky texture. I do like my biscuits a bit taller so next time I won’t roll as thin. If you don’t like whole wheat flour, you could make these with just white flour.

Be sure to let me know in the comments how you prepared these biscuits.  Did you use pepper jack or all white flour? Readers want to know!
