A fast paced book that moves through three story lines and still manages to bring it all together at the end. Suzanne is the glue that holds the friendship together of Toni, Petra and herself. Together they conquer life challenges and solve mysteries.
This is book 7 of the Cackleberry Club series. Author Laura Childs has done a great job developing 3 different characters. Follow Suzanne, Toni, and Petra as they all handle challenges differently, but also support each other.

Book Review: Outline and Tone
People love their animals. I know I love my cats! Suzanne loves her horses. In fact, Suzanne loves all horses. In this cozy mystery, Suzanne not only finds a dead dairy farmer, she stumbles across a despicable man who is not only selling horses for meat, but not treating them well before they are sold.
The book contains 3 plot lines. Suzanne and her friends from the Cackleberry Club trying to solve the mystery of the murdered dairy farmer. Creating a plan to rescue the mistreated horses. Finally, there is Sam, Suzanne’s fiancé who is gently pushing Suzanne on wedding planning and trying to keep her from putting herself in danger while she searches for the killer. All 3 of these plot lines are interesting and help to keep the story moving quickly.
The author:
Laura Childs is a pseudonym for Gerry Schmitt. She is a New York Times bestselling author writing Cozy Mysteries for Berkley Prime Crime. Eggs in Purgatory is part of her Cackleberry Club Mystery series. She also writes Tea Shop Mysteries and Scrapbook Mysteries. Her website boasts that TeaTime Magazine declared her one of the most influential people in the tea industry.
What is not to like?:
At one point, I wondered if the main characters had forgotten about the murdered dairy farmer. The storyline spends quite a bit of time on the horses. It began to feel like a horse mystery. But don’t give up, the author does a fantastic job tying it all together.
The verdict:
One of the things I love about this series is the recipes that are included. Unlike many novels with recipes, this one always includes savory recipes and not just sweets. The Molasses Bread Recipe from this book and the Hot Mama Frittata from Bedeviled Eggs are two of my favorites.

Molasses Bread Recipe
Assemble the Ingredients
Easy Bread to make: 5/5 on the Easy as Pie scale 🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧
Heat oven to 325 degrees.
In a large bowl, mix together whole wheat flour, cornmeal, salt, and baking soda.
In a separate bowl, stir molasses into buttermilk.
I use the angled measuring cup for liquids greater than 2 cups and the beaker set for all other liquids. When measuring something sticky, spray a bit of nonstick spray into the measuring cup first. This will help the sticky liquid to come out easier.
Easy to read measure marks on inside of cup. Dishwasher safe.
Now pour liquid ingredients into dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
I love these bowls from OXO because of the grips on the bottom and the pour spout.

Pour batter into a greased 9″ x 5″ loaf pan.
Rather than grease the pan, I recommend using Pan Coat. This recipe is shelf stable and works on all types of pans. This is a recipe from one of Joanne Fluke’s Hannah Swensen Mystery books.
Use a brush some pan coat with a pastry brush. I love using silicone pans for baking because they work great in the oven and they are dishwasher safe.
