It has been 11 years since The Perfect Marriage and life is not perfect anymore. Bob has cheated on Sarah and she is filing for divorce. When 2 people have life altering secrets between them, no divorce could possibly go perfectly.
As a follow up to The Perfect Marriage, I recommend reading or re-reading that novel before jumping on the ride that is this installment. I’ll give main character Sarah Morgan one thing, she has good boundaries for what she will and will not accept. Anyone that crosses that line will have to face the consequences.
The Perfect Divorce by Jeneva Rose
Literary Leftovers are book reviews and recommendations that do not contain recipes, but are books that I highly recommend.
Outline and Tone:
It has been 11 years since the events of The Perfect Marriage. Sarah’s former husband, Adam, has been put to death by the state for the killing of his mistress Kelly Summers. Sarah has moved on by marrying Bob Miller (her co-conspirator) and they have a daughter, Summer.
The novel re-introduces us to Sheriff Marcus Hudson, who was Scott Summer’s partner in the previous novel. Sheriff Hudson has a police deputy Pam Olson and they make a great pair of detectives. Unlike Sheriff Stevens, from the first novel, who turned out to be untrustworthy, these two are smart and ethical. I found Hudson and Olson to be likeable and characters who would usually be protagonists in a novel. In fact, as I read the novel, I had a hard time deciding who I should root for. Did I want Hudson and Olson as law enforcement to succeed and end the lies and deception? Or did I want Sarah and Bob to win again? I could not decide down to the last chapter!
Author Jeneva Rose does an outstanding job of leading and misleading the readers throughout the novel. As I read, I kept saying “No! that can’t be true” and “Is that real? Did that happen or is this a false narrative?” I didn’t know who to trust and who would come out the protagonist in the end. When all the events are finished and the final resolution is over, I found this novel to be a great ride!.
The Best Quote:
“It’s clear I’m not going to get any help from him, even though he’s the one responsible for the separation. But somehow, he made himself the victim in all this. I’m not surprised though. A narcissist can be either right or wronged. There is not in between.
Point of View:
The novel is written in several first person narratives. Sarah, Bob, and Sheriff Hudson all have chapters told from their perspectives.
The author: Jeneva Rose
Jeneva Rose is a New York Times best selling author. This novel The Perfect Marriage is her biggest success, so far. I expect she will be writing more best sellers. In fact on Facebook, she announced she is writing a sequel to The Perfect Marriage! She has a newsletter that you could sign up for on https://www.jenevarose.com/ . She is active on Twitter, @jenevarosebooks and she recently announced her next book. On Instagram, Jenevaroseauthor, she posts videos and more information about her activities.
What is not to like?:
My only complaint would be that so much time was spent dividing my loyalty amongst the main characters. Sheriff Hudson and Pam Olson make a great duo, author Jeneva Rose could easily write a whole series featuring their investigative work.
The verdict:
I loved it! I hope there will be another follow up. At one point, I felt that author Jeneva Rose gave us the faintest foreshadow of where the story could go. I hope I am right and there will be another “Perfect” novel.
